European folklore describes Wells where it was thought that any spoken wish would be granted. The idea that a wish would be granted came from the story that water housed deities or had been placed there as a gift from the gods.

From the god of wisdom, the myth states that wisdom would be granted to anyone who sacrificed something dear to them into the Well.
